Specialist energy & carbon management consultancy Carbon 2018 Limited, has over 20-years experience in providing expert energy, sustainability, environmental and water consultancy services.

Carbon 2018’s client experience includes working with a variety of prominent blue chip companies and major property owners. The company was asked by Regent Street Direct to provide advice about measuring The Crown Estate’s carbon footprint on its urban direct managed estate which includes, Regent Street, Swallow Street, Heddon Street and other adjacent properties.

Tracy Lewis, Operations Director at Carbon 2018 explained, “When Regent Street Direct came to us they had enjoyed considerable success in cutting carbon emission intensity by 47 per cent since 2007/8. However, not content to stop there Carbon 2018 was tasked with helping Regent Street Direct to achieve its ambitious target for a further 50 per cent by 2022.”

Before embarking on the installation of the smart meters, Carbon 2018 undertook a feasibility study to gauge the type of meter required, and to ensure that the location of each meter would allow data to be communicated back to the central data suite. Power surveys were also undertaken at pre-selected properties to confirm the loads connected to each meter, essential for monitoring in the future.

Finding the right partner

“In order for us to provide Regent Street Direct with fully rounded insight into its energy usage we turned to our trusted partner, IMServ, the UK’s largest independent energy management provider who we have worked with since 2009” explains Tracy.

IMServ works closely with many FTSE 250 organisations and companies within the commercial and industrial sectors, advising on effective energy management solutions. The company offers a range of monitoring, visualisation and control services that allow businesses to gain greater insight into their water and electricity usage.

Commenting on the partnership Tracy said, “Since beginning our working relationship with IMServ back in 2009 we have been continually impressed with the first class service we receive. IMServ has an established reputation within the industry, and it’s not hard to see why, the team are very knowledgeable, flexible, great to work with and offer competitive prices.”

Tracy continued, “The Carbon 2018 objective is to provide expert energy, sustainability, environmental and water consultancy services. from working with our customers to exploit the opportunities of the CRC Energy Efficiency Scheme, to the implementation of Building Management Systems (BMS) and Meter installations, to designing and implementing energy and sustainability strategies. Having experienced partners such as IMServ is essential to delivering a seamless service.”

IMServ provides Carbon 2018 with a range of services, but for this particular project IMServ was called in to provide a smart metering and data collection programme across 100 NHH (Non-Half Hourly) and gas supplies of The Crown Estate, with the objective of making energy management and long term strategies to reduce energy consumption more effective.

The successful smart metering programme provided Regent Street Direct with detailed analytics, which have considerably improved energy reporting, participation with the CRC and ensured accurate invoices at The Crown Estate properties.

Julie Hogarth, Director of Facilities Management at Regent Street Direct, said: “we have been able to introduce well-informed sustainable energy management strategies across the Regent Street portfolio and contribute toward The Crown Estate’s aim to reduce carbon emissions.”

Tracy Lewis, Operations Director at Carbon 2018 concluded, “Carbon 2018’s relationship with IMServ continues to develop and we have plans to turn once again to the team for its data collection and sub metering expertise.”
